The Yellow House was an old ramshackle heritage home situated in the neighbourhood of Inglewood in SE Calgary. The second floor of the old house was a tiny residence shared by Janet and Leslie for 12 years. We enjoyed many sessions of drawing in this intimate space.
As a private setting, it was a different experience than the environment in the club, bar, or restaurant scene. In these spaces the general public would come and go, bearing witness to Drunken Paws activities. Out of those who chose to take notice, some people were curious enough to talk with us. Others would simply bump our drawing arms as they made their way to the bar for another drink.
In contrast to all of this, working at the Yellow House was just the three of us. We shared music and knowledge. We talked about art, our lives and the world. All of this was occurring as we interacted with each other in our drawings. In this manner, we learned from each other, grew our friendship, and evolved our visual language as a collaborative. The house was like an incubator, complete with toasting, roasting, laughter, and kitchen dance parties.
