Museum of Ephemera and Debra Rushfeldt Studio, Nakusp, BC
August 2011 - exhibition, residency. collaboration.
The summer of 2011 saw Drunken Paw responding to an invitation to exhibit at the Museum of Ephemera in Nakusp BC. There, we would collaborate with artists Don Mabie (Chuck Stake) and Debra Rushfeldt. Both were very active members of Calgary’s art community prior to moving to BC. Don and his partner Wendy Toogood, were respected and well-loved instructors at what is now the Alberta University of the Arts.
With the help of a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, we rented a fancy Ford Escalade, loaded it up with supplies, gear, and Raymond (Leslie’s beautiful Boston Terrier), and hit the road. Upon arriving in Nakusp, we were enthusiastically welcomed, treated to sumptuous dinners and stimulating conversations. Our spirits were buoyed by the incredible warmth and generosity of our hosts.
One of our first tasks was the installation of our exhibit Egg Drop Soup at the Museum of Ephemera. Other than receiving museum guests at the open house held by museum curator Don Mabie, the remainder of our time was spent touring the area and drawing collaboratively with Don and Debra. All of the drawings produced in Nakusp were done in collaboration with either Don Mabie or Debra Rushfeldt. Their influence is easily seen in the completed works.
